How to Prepare for a Business Growth Consultation

By Syed Qamar Abbas · Published

Bring a decision, not a folder of everything. A concise summary of your business, the current customer journey and the constraint you want to understand makes a consultation more useful.

Write a one-page brief

  1. What do you sell, and to whom?
  2. Where do you serve customers?
  3. Which business outcome matters next?
  4. How do customers currently discover and contact you?
  5. Where do you think the journey is breaking?
  6. What have you already tried?
  7. What team, budget and delivery constraints must a plan respect?

Bring evidence with context

If available, prepare aggregated inquiries, qualified inquiries, bookings and sales for the same period. Include spend only where its scope is clear. A screenshot without dates or definitions is difficult to interpret.

If tracking is incomplete, say so. The first priority may be establishing a baseline rather than prescribing another channel. Do not invent estimates to make a report look complete.

Keep sensitive information out of the brief

Use public website links and aggregated numbers. Do not send passwords, payment card details, patient records or private customer conversations. If deeper access is genuinely needed, agree on a separate authorized process with minimum necessary permissions.

Confirm the agreement before paying

Confirm who attends, the duration, format, scope, fee, any written output and cancellation or rescheduling terms. A consultation and implementation engagement are different purchases. Compare offers by their agreed scope rather than price alone.

Leave with a decision to act on

Write down the decision, its assumptions, who owns the next action and when you will review progress. Separate immediate work from ideas that depend on better evidence.
